Wieland Electric has been a major contributor to the transformation of Birmingham New Street station by supplying its popular gesis 2, 5 & 6 pole pluggable installation system with integrated DALI to feed lighting around the new concourse.

The project has been more than three years in the making and the first phase of the new concourse is now complete and open to passengers. The station is the busiest interchange station on Britain’s national rail network and previously was dark, unwelcoming and overcrowded, with poor access for passengers. The regeneration project has seen a much needed, bigger and brighter new concourse with very much improved access to all platforms, including 36 new escalators and 15 lifts reaching every platform.

Wieland’s gesis pluggable system was the preferred choice as it allows for quick and easy error free installation on site. The gesis range of components come pre-assembled and tested so stripping, clamping and cutting to length are not required. The range comprises of connectors, radio-controlled switching devices, devices for remote building automation and pluggable distribution boxes for modern facility management, cables and busbars as well as low-voltage systems.

Phase two of the project, which includes the second half of the concourse redevelopment and new atrium, is due to be completed in summer 2015.
