Wincanton implemented Thorn Lighting’s HiPak Pro LED high bay luminaires at The Railshed, part of the company’s Corby facility, to reduce energy consumption and increase sustainability whilst providing a well-lit working environment. The refurbishment of its Corby warehouse, involved reconfiguring and expanding the racking layout of The Railshed, a 2,294m2 area attached to the main warehouse, prompting a re-design and upgrade of the lighting.

With 18,000 employees, over 200 sites and a fleet of 3,400 vehicles, Wincanton’s services cover the full spectrum of supply chain activities, from transport and warehousing to home deliveries. The company is committed to providing innovative, flexible solutions that help customers to compete in their chosen markets with confidence. Wincanton has excellent environmental credentials, as highlighted by the Carbon Trust Standard which it has held since 2010, and continuously works to reduce energy consumption and the related emissions where possible.

Lighting accounts for a significant proportion of site energy costs across the company’s facilities so The Railshed presented the perfect opportunity for Thorn to install LED lighting as a means of achieving Wincanton’s environmental goals. Thorn Lighting’s HiPak Pro LED high bay luminaires were the ideal solution, providing the option of a narrow beam angle for the newly installed racks and a wide beam angle for the open areas. A total of 64 luminaires were installed, each with an output of 14,000 lumens.

The figures for The Railshed lighting upgrade are impressive, as the Hi HiPak Pro LED luminaires have reduced the Rail shed’s annual energy, carbon and maintenance costs with a payback of just under 1.5 years.

Steve Tainton, Group Energy and Environment Manager at Wincanton, commented “Our investment in this lighting solution demonstrates that Wincanton is committed to investing in low energy technologies as part of our wider sustainability plan. The lighting provides a whiter, more natural light than traditional warehouse fittings and is also very controllable, giving colleagues a more comfortable working environment. Thorn met all our objectives for this project with their effective solution and efficient delivery.”

HiPak Pro LED is up to 45% more efficient than 250W/400W alternatives, combining high efficiency (93Llm/W), 50,000-hour lamp life, low maintenance and a robust design. Dedicated individual optics provide precise light control for high level mounting applications, whilst DALI light and movement sensors maximise visual comfort and energy savings.
