Hot water and heating specialist Adveco, offers commercial facilities with large hot water demands but space limitations a complete, highly-efficient, low carbon resolution with its Packaged e-Hot Water System.

Conceived and built in-house, the Adveco Packaged e-Hot Water System addresses project limitations by creating a standardised external plant room with essential building services already located within it for a system specifically sized to meet the typical needs of a larger facility with a 12-hour daily operation and one peak hour,  equating to 1370 litres of hot water per day.

The system leverages all the advantages of off-site construction to provide a resilient environmentally friendly, low carbon, hot water system that helps reduce both a building’s energy consumption and operational costs across its lifetime.

This prefabricated all-electric water heating system comprises an inverter-driven Adveco FPi-9 Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) mounted on the outside of a reinforced wall of the compact, weatherproof GRP housing and an Adveco 200L GLC indirect preheat tank.  This preheated water is then transferred into an Adveco 200L GLE direct electric water heater that provides reliable high-temperature water from a system that can be easily located adjacent to a building, or on a suitable flat roof-space.

Adveco’s Packaged e-Hot Water System makes full use of the FPi-9 ASHP to provide the system preheat from 10°C to 50°C, supplying 70% of the Domestic Hot Water (DHW) load for a nominal 18kW of heat input to the domestic hot water (9kW ASHP and 9kW electric element). As the coefficient of performance (COP) will often be determined by the characteristics of the hot water system installation and set-up, opting for a prefabricated system ensures the electricity invested in order to run the ASHP and heat transferred from the evaporator to the condenser is optimised.

By offsetting 70% of the energy requirement, the Packaged e-Hot Water System can demonstrate a 47% reduction in energy demands and CO² emissions for the same output of 500,000 litres of hot water each year when compared with a similar direct electric only system. The reduced energy demand also means operational savings can be added to the capital savings secured during the design, supply, and installation phases. Additional advantages of an all-electric approach ensures there are no local NOₓ emissions from the system, and noise pollution is avoided with extremely quiet operation from the FPi-9 which generates just 56dB, which can be reduced at night with the FPi’s ‘quiet time operation’ feature.

Adveco has also created a completely new specification for the lead immersion heater used in the 200L GLE. This specification lowers the heat intensity, without detrimental effect to the demands for hot water to just 6 W/cm² – as compared to 18w/cm² that you might see from a typical domestic immersion heater. This helps to address the common issue of scale build-up seen in hot water systems that impairs efficient operation and can prove costly to rectify if not addressed.

As well as reducing maintenance demands, the system also comes complete with an Adveco designed control system and back up to provide resilience and surety of hot water. For sites where hot water is ‘business critical’ a robust back up to prevent the loss of hot water is vital.  The GLE has an additional 6kW immersion heater to provide backup in case of failure of the lead heat source.  The controls system monitors the heat sources, and in the case of failure it can automatically activate the backup system and send an email to offsite maintenance staff to inform them instantly of a problem with the lead system.

With dimensions of just 1.2m wide by 2.75m long, and a height of 1.37m Adveco’s Packaged e-Hot Water System is ideal for new build projects or refurbishment where space is at a premium. It is particularly applicable for restaurants and boutique hotels, leisure centres, care facilities, offices and schools where there is a consistent and regular demand for DHW for washing and showering.
