Baxi Commercial Division has donated two Potterton Commercial high efficiency condensing boilers for the recent redevelopment of St. George’s Crypt, one of the UK’s foremost homeless charities. A £1.5 million redevelopment at the Crypt’s main site at Great George Street, Leeds has provided refurbishment of the existing facilities, together with an extension.

The new facilities include a number of individual bedrooms, a new reception area, modern training rooms for personal and life skills, a lounge for the residents and an expanded and refurbished restaurant with a new kitchen. This project has been made possible thanks to donations from charitable trusts, companies, private individuals and the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency which has granted almost £1million to the project.

The two Paramount two 95kW boilers were selected by KSP Consulting and a spokesman commented: “As space within the Crypt is very limited we chose the Paramount two boilers because they are high output, compact and are wall mounted. In addition they are very efficient with fanned flues.” The boilers serve steel panel radiators throughout the existing Crypt area, the newly modified areas and the new extension which has been added to the side of the Crypt and Church. Additional efficiencies have been achieved by locating the boilers in a new plantroom nearer to the radiator circuits, which has reduced the amount of distribution losses. The existing boiler has been maintained to serve the Church. Building services were installed by Ellison Energy Ltd. and the main contractor was Baum Construction Management Ltd.

The Paramount two range of wall-hung condensing boilers feature state-of-the-art heating technology with a combustion system which delivers energy efficiency levels up to 109% net as well as ultra low NOx which exceeds Class 5. These boilers have pre-mix, fully modulating control for complete heating flexibility and the aluminium/silicon alloy heat exchanger carries a lifetime guarantee. A user-friendly control panel with full text display of operational status avoids the inconvenience of checking codes or lights. Other features include inbuilt weather compensation, summer/winter changeover and time control facilities. The advanced ISR control system in this case operates with a simple room thermostat, with a remote control panel, although it can also be used with a fully integrated Building Energy Management System. The Paramount two boilers are available in six sizes, from 30kW to 115kW.

For 80 years, St George’s Crypt has offered care and shelter for homeless and needy people in the Leeds area and this latest project will enable it to offer even greater support. Modern training rooms offer courses in art and crafts, debt management and literacy, whilst the new lounge means that residents no longer need to leave the premises after each meal, as was the case previously. An IT suite is due for completion soon and this, together with the other new facilities, will enable the Crypt to place a greater emphasis on rebuilding the lives of clients, many of whom have drug and alcohol dependency issues and/or mental health problems.
