Knowledge is king
“Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but the lifelong attempt to acquire it”.
Lao Tzu – Chinese philosopher who founded Taoism.
The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has been building up a significant body of engineering expertise and experience for more than a century. This huge body of knowledge is now available to the whole sector through a comprehensive range of publications, guidance and industry recognised standards that cover almost every specialist topic within building services engineering.
However, this is not a case of just presenting dry learning to its audience; BESA is also able to call on an enormous repository of practical experience provided by its members and collaborators that informs that learning and makes valuable and relevant to today’s contractors.
“Our heritage has allowed us to build up a huge body of knowledge that we are now delighted to share with the whole sector,” says CEO David Frise. “However, knowing something is not the same as being able to apply it to a practical task.
“This has been a guiding principle for the Association throughout its long history and is reflected in the guides and standards available through our Knowledge Portal, which houses our collective industry ‘wisdom’,” he adds.
BESA’s knowledge is targeted very specifically at the specialist trades within the building services sector and has been fine tuned to make it up-to-date and applicable to day-to-day tasks.
The Association has launched a free catalogue highlighting a selection of the technical specifications and guides to good practice available. These cover areas such as ductwork manufacture and installation, refrigeration, kitchen installation, kitchen maintenance, air conditioning, local exhaust ventilation, health and safety, low carbon and sustainable engineering, digital technologies and commercial performance standards.
Available for purchase or for free download, BESA’s publications are written by industry experts responding to specific demands from the sector for technical guidance or to reflect changes in legislation including revisions to the Building Regulations.
They are revised and updated on a regular basis with BESA members often acting as editors, authors and peer reviewers and are relevant to system designers, contractors, suppliers, compliance managers, project managers, commissioning engineers, trainers – in fact anyone responsible for the design, commissioning, operation and maintenance of building services equipment.
As well as the existing body of knowledge, there are several more publications in the pipeline and due to be added to the Portal this year. These include: Welding of Carbon Steel Pipework; guides to both the site pressure testing and installation and testing of Pipework; a guide to best practice in offsite manufacture of building services systems; and a new guide to commissioning.
All BESA members, including affiliates and associates, receive a 50% discount on all publications.
