The Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) has published a new Approved Document for Part J (Combustion appliances and fuel storage systems) of the Building Regulations which comes into effect on 1 October 2010.

David Bleicher, Training Manager at BSRIA, says: “It is important that this part of the Building Regulations, and the guidance supporting it, is periodically reviewed in the light of changes in technology and standards as well as operational experience and new research.”

The new document provides guidance about compliance with specific aspects of building regulations in some of the more common building situations and includes issues related to air supply for combustion in airtight homes, carbon monoxide alarms where solid fuel appliances are installed, provision of hearths and wall clearances to allow greater flexibility in the use of modern biomass appliances, access for visual inspection of concealed flues and secondary containment for oil tanks.
