Cawleys delighted to join the race to save the planet

A sustainable waste clean-up operation was part of this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon.

Cawleys, one of the largest independent waste management companies in South East England, was specifically chosen to manage the waste collection and recycling around this year’s Virgin Money London marathon.

With plastic pollution and carbon emissions high on the public agenda, the team are more aware than ever about the waste generated at the event and the need to minimise environmental damage. As such, they chose waste management company, Cawleys, which is known for its commitment to sustainability.

Not only did Cawleys segregate waste streams, such as plastic bottles and deliver them back to the manufacturer for recycling, it is also one of the few waste management companies that pass all general black bag waste through a full materials recycling facility. This allows all recyclable waste to be recovered, even when it hasn’t been segregated or earmarked for recycling. Anything that can’t be recycled is processed for refuse derived fuel resulting in minimal impact on the environment.

Cawleys has a reputation for pioneering new recycling solutions. It was one of the first companies to introduce a coffee grounds recycling service for businesses in London and the South East; the first to introduce food recycling for the retail sector, and most recently the first to pioneer the collection, disposal and recycling of lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles and machinery.

Phil Gudgeon, MD of Cawleys, and himself a keen sportsman said: “I’m very proud that our company was part of the team making this London Marathon the most sustainable yet.”

The event organisers introduced many green innovations this year, including edible Lucozade Sport capsules which will help avoid single-use plastic waste. Other products used at the event highlighted the role of the circular economy. Paper cups and plastic bottles, for example, were made from recycled content.
