Beard named in Sunday Times list of UK’s best performing businesses

Beard has been named among the top performing businesses in the UK in a prestigious league table published by the Sunday Times newspaper.

The PwC Top Track 250 table ranks the UK’s leading mid-market private companies with the highest sales and has placed the family-owned construction firm at 151. Beard was in fact the highest placed for construction firms based in its region and most profitable for the south of England.

The announcement is a positive endorsement of Beard’s business strategy and ambition to be the most successful and respected construction company in its region and chosen sectors, particularly education, heritage, sport, and care.

It will be particularly welcome after the challenges posed by the ongoing coronavirus crisis. But unlike a number of its competitors Beard ensured its building sites stayed open throughout lockdown, and projects were completed with the minimum of disruption.

It has also maintained a strong financial position and been able to keep its commitment to pay all suppliers promptly, on average in 26 days.

However there have also been a number of challenges which have led to difficult decisions being made. But finance director Fraser Johns says it is testament to the strength of the workforce and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances that the firm has come through it.

“Inclusion in this league table sends out a strong, positive message about our business performance”, says Johns. “For us it’s a real boost to be part of it this year and listed among some great British brands. Particularly as, this year more than most, we’ve had to adapt and innovate to try to weather the storm caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’ve also had some difficult decisions to make but we have seen our colleagues rally in the face of that. You really see the truth in the adage of people being your greatest asset in times of crisis, it’s certainly the case at Beard. At the same time, we’ve actually found some real positives and changes for the better in the way we work.

“We have also been able to demonstrate to our customers that they can be confident we will deliver as promised, by releasing our independently reviewed interim accounts. We have the financial stability that has enabled us to keep sites open and deliver projects.

“Our vision as a business is to create buildings for living, working, playing, performing and connecting. But we also have to grow in order to create a secure future, so being listed in this year’s PwC Top Track 250 demonstrates that we are achieving that aim.”

Sales by Beard, which employs around 300 staff, totalled £158.7million up to year end December 2019, with an operating profit of £4.7million.
