Cold Control, the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration company, were recently called upon by their local butcher to help in the development of a new site. CJ Read, a butcher in Medstead, Hampshire who was trying to create the largest, most modern butchers in the South.
Cold Control helped supply the majority of the refrigeration equipment in Read’s previous shop. Norman Read, the proprietor of CJ Read, asked Cold Control for their expertise again in specifying equipment for his new and improved site which included a dual compartment cold room, dedicated prep area and shop area to incorporate the ever increasing number of people using his shop.
Cold Control installed a variety of top of the range refrigeration systems. Within the main shop a 15 metre Pastorfrigor serve-over refrigerated display counter, which accommodates the extended fresh meat selection and houses delicatessen style produce including cheese, fish and olives. With its hydraulic lift-up glass, this modern display is easy for the butchers to keep clean and the refrigerated under counter storage will facilitate increased productivity.
Within the main shop area Cold Control installed an energy efficient Mitsubishi Electric inverter driven heat pump air conditioning system, providing heating in the winter months and cooling in the summer. The system provides energy savings of up to 70% annually when compared to a previous non-inverter model, and has a very low starting current of only 5 amps.
The new site incorporates a dual compartment cold room, made up of a separate freezer and chiller unit constructed from 100mm thick CFC free, closed cell, rigid Polyisocyanurate foam panels finished in white foodsafe hard PVC. Within the chiller Cold Control have designed and installed hygienic stainless steel hanging rails designed to accommodate a total of 5500kg of fresh meat.
Both compartments were fitted with Kuba forced air Eurovent certified coolers connected to low noise Silensys condensing units sited outside the shop, a necessity due to the residential flats located within close proximity.
The Butchers prep area was fitted with a Kuba Eurovent certified dual discharge air cooler system with integrated air baffle plates for low air speed cooling and a temperature application range of 0°C to +20°C. The unit is ideal for applications where people are constantly working around the area as the dual discharge creates less draughts promoting staff comfort. In addition, the unit is ultra quiet complimenting good working conditions.
The complete site required precise internal environmental control, regarding temperature, hygiene, thermal and fire safety. In addition to the refrigeration equipment Cold Control fitted hygienic insulated composite wall panel cladding to approximately 72 linear metres of exposed blockwork. The panels can be easily washed and cleaned and are not prone to surface or interstitial condensation, as this could lead to the formation of bacteria and mould growth on the surface causing health and safety issues.
