Luminaires from Riegens Lighting have played a vital role in improving the visual environment for people employed in Tube Lines Limited’s control room at Westferry Circus. Feedback from employees suggested that the overall visual environment was poor for VDU screen work and that more control would be beneficial.
With its HQ at 15 Westferry Circus, Tube Lines Limited is a private company responsible for the maintenance, renewal and upgrade of the infrastructure of three of London’s busiest tube lines; the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines which are some of the deepest on the network. This includes track, trains, signals, civil work and stations. Altogether, Tube Lines is responsible for over 200 miles of track, 255 trains, 100 stations, and over 2,500 bridges, lifts and escalators spread across these three lines.
Riegens were initially invited to produce a sample luminaire to fit into a 750mm ceiling grid and its Codos Glide luminaire fitted the bill perfectly. Riegens 600cm x 600cm Codos Glide was supplied in an SAS 750 x 750 ceiling tile, along with 2 x 36W TCL 1 – 10V dimmable lamps and a five year guarantee. Impressed with the performance of the luminaire, Mike Cochran, site supervisor with Norland, the maintenance arm of Tube Lines, confirmed the order with Riegens.
As the control room operates 24 hours a day, access and maintenance are difficult but with close liaison with Riegens and staff co-operation the project was completed successfully and on time. As the ceilings in the control room are high, the Codos Glide luminaires have been installed on gondolas and can be recessed or lowered in keeping with LG requirements and to simplify maintenance. Mike Cochran commented: “I am very pleased with the overall appearance of the luminaires, which provide a comfortable visual environment and can now easily be controlled by the staff”.
