As gadgets go, the Super Cam V6 from Super Rod is a good one, but they do say ‘a gadget is for life not just for Christmas’ so as well as being something to impress your friends with, it has to actually work.
Well I’m happy to say that it does do exactly what it says on the tin and after a bit of fun with it in the office I handed it over to a professional for a full workout.
Getting started
The Super Cam V6 is a wireless inspection camera with a 3.5” colour, LCD recordable monitor which comes in a fairly heavy duty case to protect it from knocks and bumps.
That in itself is a good thing because it does mean that it is protected in every environment, but once you open the box, using the Super Cam is simplicity itself with easy to follow instructions that mean it is up and running in no time. Unlike some systems it is also simple to use after the initial set up and before you know it you are carrying out your first inspection.
How it works
Put simply this is one piece of equipment you can’t afford to be without because its 17mm endoscope camera means that it is perfect for inspecting cable runs, under floors, wall cavities and confined spaces. In addition the V6 monitor has a recording function, which allows you to document inspections and discuss tasks with clients while playing footage back through the monitor, through AV connections or through a computer via USB.
The flexible tube with the camera on the end can be bent into shape to manoeuvre it into position and while at first site you may feel that the viewing length could be limited, in actual fact this is one of the most versatile parts of it because you can increase the viewing distance by adding extension lengths. In addition to this a 9mm diameter camera head is also available which can be used to inspect smaller voids.
The Super Cam V6 also includes a bracket which allows rods and attachments from the Cable Rod range of cable routing tools to be connected meaning that you can carry out any small jobs during the inspection. The inclusion of a mirror, hook and magnet, which connect directly onto the camera head, is also invaluable for carrying out a thorough inspection or simply for locating and retrieving lost screws.
In action
If you spend even a part of your working day crawling around in confined spaces then this will be a welcome addition to your tool kit.
We liked the lightweight, handheld design which made it easy to manoeuvre around in tight spaces when diagnosing and solving problems.
The Super Cam V6 is also very versatile in use, for example, during testing we were able to look under the floor to check on cable runs and behind the boilers in the plant room, but in addition to this it has a multitude of uses including HVAC and plumbing inspection and any form of cable routing.
Without actually trying it out for yourself then I am afraid that you have to take my word for the fact that this is an excellent piece of kit which is worth its weight in gold. My advice would be to give it a try and save yourself a lot of wasted time and effort clambering around in confined spaces with a torch and mirror.
