Keeping control of Catterick
Published:  20 November, 2009

BG Controls has installed a Building Management System (BMS) in the newly built leisure centre at Catterick Garrison - the UK's largest army base.

Based in North Yorkshire, the leisure centre is open to military personnel as well as the local community. Facilities inside the £21million development include a 25-metre six-lane competition pool, a training pool, a teaching pool and a six-court sports hall for five-a-side football, basketball, volleyball, netball and badminton, which also has cricket nets and trampolines.

There is also a library and a Regional Rehabilitation Unit with specialist equipment to help military personnel recover from injuries or wounds sustained in combat or while training.

BG Controls has designed, installed and commissioned a sophisticated BMS to control the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning within the 170,000sq ft building. Its engineers installed Trend IQ3 controllers in conjunction with customised control panels that were manufactured by its own in-house workshop.

Networked via a Trend front-end, the system facilitates comfortable training conditions by circulating fresh air throughout the building. It is also used to control underfloor heating in the gym and conventional heating throughout the building.
