Setsquare focus on lighting
Stand Number: C144
Published:  05 October, 2009

Setsquare Ltd will be addressing the needs of lighting in schools on their stand at the M&E Show, focusing on the correct lighting and its control.

The well being within the learning environment is of great significance as poor lighting can lead to numerous problems ranging from behavioural reactions to the inability to concentrate, not to mention the more common problems of eyestrain, headaches, irritability and fatigue. Apart from these physical characteristics the requirement for the artificial lighting is that it has to be energy efficient.

Numerous pieces of information are available to the designer to achieve the correct lighting levels for schools and educational environments. There is the European Standard EN 12464-1:2002, which recommends the lighting levels to be achieved throughout the educational building and this can be supplemented by the various CIBSE lighting guides.

To meet these criteria, the latest generation of fluorescent lamps coupled with effective lighting controls satisfies these requirements and achieves the desired lighting for almost any application. Lighting alone can account for up to half of a schools energy use and by putting this under occupancy control can give energy savings of up to 40% of the lighting costs. Couple this with dimming using daylight linking via photocells and the savings become even greater.

Typically a fluorescent lamp dimmed to 50% will halve the cost of the energy used. When you consider that most lamps are designed to give out more lux than a room requires because of the flexibility and multi use of these spaces, then some level of dimming will almost always be the norm and hence a corresponding reduction in energy usage.

Visit the stand to see the Setsquare Daylux modular or standalone range comprising occupancy sensors, photocells, combined sensors and controllers which will help you to achieve the correct lighting levels for every application.
