From the outside, Fratelli's café and restaurant in Ponteland, a popular suburb of Newcastle, looks small. However, Tardis like, on a mezzanine floor, it has space for 250 covers, kitchen, bars and a large lounge area. What it does not have is any free space for water heating plant.
To overcome this problem, contractors HLA Services of Newcastle used two Rinnai HD 50i continuous flow gas water heaters linked to a 500 litre buffer tank. The heaters are hidden away in a small cupboard off the restaurant's office and store room. The heaters serve the large hot water demands of the kitchens as well as the washrooms and toilets.
The two heaters can provide 40 litres a minute and for use in the kitchens. This is supplied at 70ºC and kept to within1ºC of that setting, important where hot water is required for thorough cleaning and washing tasks.
The 500 litre buffer tank, which comes as a package from Rinnai with the heaters and all controls and connections, means that any peaks in demand can always be met without the need for very large water storage vessels with the cost, space and heat loss penalties that they would incur.
