Pilkington provides fire protection
Published:  27 July, 2009

North Glasgow College has utilised Pilkington Pyrostop fire resistant glazing for a brand new state-of-the-art learning facility in its campus in the Springburn area of the city. This £42million, 16,900m² development incorporates a central atrium space, with Pilkington Pyrostop used to protect its occupants and contents from fire whilst allowing natural light into the building.

The atrium accommodates a new Learning Resource Centre with key facilities, such as brand new computing systems. Two elements of the college (academic teaching spaces and technical workshops) have been linked with a glazed corridor, with the atrium providing a new social hub. Safety is paramount, and a tried and tested product with protection against heat, flames and hot gases was required. Pilkington Pyrostop is a clear, laminated fire resistant glass providing integrity and insulation - two key features for protecting against fire - vital in a college housing people and valuable equipment.

Pilkington worked closely with window fabricators, Mann McGowan, who used 212m2 of Pilkington Pyrostop to construct windows for the atrium that met the required fire resistance to BS 476 part 22, and stipulated that the fire-resistant barriers must provide demonstrated 60 minutes insulation and integrity performance by test. Pilkington Pyrostop provides this as well as impact resistance to Class 1(B)1 to BS EN 12600, signifying laminated impact performance at the highest classification.

Paul Stallan, Director of architects RMJM, commented: "The safety of students and staff is the most important aspect when designing any educational building, so of course we ensured that products of the highest standard like Pilkington Pyrostop were used in every aspect of the design and construction, to guarantee the best protection against the effects of fire.

"Fire protection is not just about life safety; with property losses rising, the focus in the current climate is increasingly towards safeguarding investments, and protecting current assets, which Pilkington assists with their fire-resistant glass. Everyone involved in the project is excited and committed to procuring the best possible future for North Glasgow College and the surrounding community, with Pilkington Pyrostop helping us to create a highly secure and safe piece of architecture."
