We've all been there - trying to take accurate measurements while holding both ends of the tape measure at the same time and marking the wall with a pencil that you can't quite manage because you don't have three hands! If that sounds familiar then you are in for a treat with the introduction of the new TLM130i from Stanley, a quick and efficient precision laser tool that makes light work of a host of measurement tasks.
The product
The TLM130i is a smart addition to an already extensive family of laser measurement tools from Stanley and as you'd expect from the leading tool manufacturer, it is packed with well-considered features to make life easier for the tradesmen and home improver alike. Whether you are struggling to measure a hard to reach spot or measure a large distance on your own, it offers a quick and convenient solution.
In summary, it really is a case of ‘just point the laser, press the button and measure' but don't let this ease of use fool you into thinking this is a tool lacking in intelligence. The TLM130i uses a 2 point Pythagoras function to measure up to a distance of 30m with an accuracy of +/- 2mm and is able to measure from both the front and back of unit for ultimate flexibility and reliability.
It also boasts practical good looks too with a sleek and silver body, heavy duty rubber keyboard and large two line display. The TLM130i also comes with a handy holster for added protection and is priced at £90.21(RRP ex VAT) making it an attractive option for just about everyone.
The TLM130i's siblings in the family of Stanley laser measurement tools are equally well-considered. Look out for the TLM160i and TLM210i which offer enhanced accuracy levels of +/- 1.5mm, larger distance measuring (60m and 100m respectively), together with additional features for specific working environments and job contexts. For example, the TLM210i has a broad temperature reach from -10ºC to 50ºC and the ability to store and stack up to 19 previous values.
On test
There are numerous products that sound great in the manufacturer's description but when you take it out of the box you need a degree in rocket science to work out how to use it! Thankfully this is not the case with the TLM130i because it really is as easy to use as Stanley suggest.
The fact that it only needs six pages of instructions to explain how to use every function was a relief and from the minute you insert the batteries (which are included in the box) you are up and running.
What I like most about this product is that every function is clear and easy to use and whether measuring single distances or continuous the results are accurate.
The display is also another feature which I can highly commend. It is very clear and easy to read and isn't clogged up by numerous pieces of information which you simply don't need - all too often the manufacturer believes that you want to know what time it is in China while you are taking your measurements and quite simply - you don't! With the TLM130i it only displays the relevant information which you need to carry out the job, avoiding any confusion or mistakes.
The verdict
My verdict for this product is definitely a thumbs up. It comes from a name that you can trust and which has a pedigree for providing good quality products. The price tag makes it very affordable and because of the number of functions which it performs it provides very good value for money.
In addition it is very rugged and looks and feels like it will stand up to the test of time. I particularly like the rubber hand holds which ensure that wherever you are using it and in whatever conditions you will always be able to maintain a good grip. The fact that it also comes with a handy storage pouch means that you can mistreat it a little without worrying about breaking it.
My advice would be to check this product out - you will wonder how you ever managed without it.
