If you know you have to make the projects you're responsible for more sustainable, but don't know where to start then a visit to the Training Academy at the M&E Event is a must. Sponsored by SummitSkills, this is a series of free seminars forming a step-by-step guide to achieving a more sustainable business. Compiled in conjunction with all the leading associations, institutes and groups including CIBSE and the ECA, the seminars include guidelines, advice and information from the heart of the industry and will give you access to opinion formers in the M&E sector.
Day 1
9:45 - 11:15
Sustainable from the start: the role of the contractor in energy efficient buildings.
Chair: David Pollock, ECA Group CEO
11:30 - 13:00
The big debate: Why aren't sustainable buildings happening?
Chair: Robert Higgs, director of the HVCA
This year's Big Debate will get to the heart of what's holding back the development of more sustainable buildings in the UK.
With legislation such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and Part L, along with local government driving use of on-site renewables, the UK should be awash with green building projects. But truly sustainable buildings are still a rarity. In spite of developments in techniques such as computer modelling, and low carbon technologies for heating and cooling commercial and domestic buildings, the market seems to be sticking to business as usual as far as design and installation are concerned.
The live discussion aims to identify why this is happening with experts from HVCA, ECA, CIBSE and other key organisations on hand.
14:00 - 15:30
Sustainable and usable - building for the environment and occupants
Chair: Ewen Rose of M&E Sustainability
Ian Fielder from BIFM will highlight what building managers and occupiers want from sustainable buildings - and how the construction team can help them achieve it.
David Frise, General Manager of Bailey Energy Services will outline the contractor's role in delivering sustainable buildings, and how practical issues of construction and user requirements can be balanced with sustainable building techniques and technologies.
Ant Wilson from Faber Maunsell and CIBSE will then discuss how the ideal sustainable building is one which meets the needs of occupants and the environment for many years to come.
15:40 - 16:10
Start as you mean to go on - commissioning for energy efficient buildings
Nick Till from Banyards looks at the importance of commissioning a building.
Day 2
9:45 - 11:15
Measure, meter and monitor
Chair: Doug Robins, President BCIA
The expert panel from the field of building controls discusses the implications of new legislation on energy monitoring.
11:30 - 13:00
Approaches to energy efficient cooling for today's buildings
Chair: David Pollock, ECA Group CEO
There's no getting away from the fact that cooling buildings can be an energy-intensive process. But there are technologies and techniques available that can cut energy use by 50% or more. The expert panel will discuss some of the most energy efficient options and equipment for cooling today's commercial buildings.
14:00 - 15:30
Sustainable Homes: targets and technology
The Code for Sustainable Homes has been developed to enable a step-change in the construction of sustainable dwellings in the UK. The Code will be a national standard, and while it is currently voluntary it will soon become compulsory for new homes to reach set standards of sustainable design and construction outlined by the Code. The speakers will explain the Code and describe some of the latest technologies being used in low-energy homes.
15:40 - 16:45
Going green: modelling for successful sustainable buildings
Dr Ben Cartmell of SouthFacing will demonstrate some of the latest modelling tools which are helping designers ensure that buildings are energy efficient, low-carbon and good environments for occupants.
Colin Rees, Project Manager for IES Consulting will then discuss how sustainable buildings can be unpredictable in their performance, as they often use innovative design techniques or new renewable technologies.
Total Workplace Management
Taking place alongside the M&E Event is Total Workplace Management which has a seminar programme focussing on the efficient maintenance and running of a buildings infrastructure.
