In September, a number of colleges around England will be offering two new diplomas for 14-19 year olds that herald a key development in our sector. They will greatly improve the understanding of building services engineering by showing young people how exciting and challenging the industry can be. Even more important for employers, they will improve the quality of the people that we recruit into the industry.
The diplomas, one in Engineering and one in Construction & Built Environment, contain elements that are relevant to building services engineering. They operate at three levels, to ensure an attractive learning route for students of all abilities. The blend of academic and applied learning is more motivating and engaging than either purely theoretical or occupationally-specific training, which will encourage pupils to stay in education and training for longer. They are ground breaking qualifications that will teach young people about building services engineering in ways that directly relate to the working environment. Both diplomas are actively supported by professional organisations and have been accepted by the wider education community, including university admissions tutors who have acknowledged them as an approved route for studying at degree level.
For these new diplomas to be successful, it is essential that ongoing contribution from employers keeps the teaching relevant and supplies students with appropriate experience of the real world of work. You can become involved in a number of ways: through providing placements for the statutory ten-day work experience required as part of the qualification; allowing teachers to spend time in your company to keep their knowledge up to date; visiting schools, colleges and careers events to talk directly to pupils, perhaps becoming a mentor; supplying resource materials for the classroom; and providing real life technical problems for students to solve.
In return, you will benefit from a pool of potential employees trained to a high standard, with a good understanding of construction and engineering principles and experience of the work place. These young people will bring fresh ideas into your company that could enhance your working methods and instigate business solutions to the challenges of the marketplace.
There are many immediate benefits too. Your input will generate increased awareness and a positive image of your company, its products and services in your local area. This could lead to potential PR opportunities and give you more influence in your local community. Your staff will also benefit from improved communication and people skills that will be an inevitable by-product of the wider networking opportunities.

There is an obvious need for the industry to be more energy efficient and pay more attention to the ways in which energy is both used and wasted. Do you think we have the products on the market to meet our needs?
