Carrier Corp will commemorate the 100-year anniversary of its subsidiary in Italy, Carrier S.p.A, with a European customer event at its Villasanta manufacturing facility near Milan.
In 1908, six years after Willis Carrier invented modern air conditioning, two engineers in Milan, A. Chieregatti and A. Donesana founded Dell'Orto, a ventilating and heating systems and services company. In 1941, Dell'Orto became Dell'Orto Chieregatti and in 1945, the company built its production facilities in Villasanta and soon won prestigious projects including La Scala in Milan and La Fenice Theatre in Venice. The company was re-named Delchi in 1966, during a decade when they expanded rapidly as a leading systems provider. It completed premier installations such as providing air conditioning for Milan's Galfa skyscraper and the Gran San Bernardo tunnel ventilating system. In 1983, Carrier acquired Delchi. The company became Delchi Carrier and subsequently, in 1996, Carrier S.p.A.
Today, Carrier S.p.A's countrywide distribution network in Italy provides heating and air-conditioning solutions for residential, commercial and industrial applications, together with a broad range of after sales services and training programs. The factory, still located in Villasanta, is one of Carrier's leading global factories, which produced more than 300,000 units in 2007.
The Villasanta factory is also Carrier's global lead design centre for light commercial products focusing on duct-free splits, indoor units, small chillers and heat pumps.
Carrier products from Villasanta are installed in many prestigious buildings in Italy and worldwide including: The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the shrine of the Turin Shroud, the Monza Formula 1 racetrack, the Tower Hotel in Cagliari, the Olympics Games Village in Athens and the Marriot Hotel in El Cairo.
