BSEE - Building Services and Environmental Engineer
New training initiative
Published:  30 January, 2008

Trox Academy has extended its training options by offering short term work placements (4-6 weeks) for design engineers at their UK Headquarters in Thetford, Norfolk.

A pilot training scheme has been set up in conjunction with Paul Clark, Associate Director and Head of Technical Training at hurleypalmerflatt.  The idea is to give the mechanical engineer an insight into a manufacturer's environment and increase his knowledge and skills on certain pre-selected terminal air conditioning systems.

John Naguib of hurleypalmerflatt, who attended the first series of programmes, said: "The purpose of my work placement was to ascertain the business strategy of Trox UK and to understand the work needed to produce the products required for heating, ventilation and air conditioning incorporated within the built environment.  This placement showed the process from beginning to end, telephone sales to end product, and the processes to which the manufacturer has to adhere to achieve what has been specified."

The programme covered a wide range of terminal air conditioning systems manufactured by Trox and included air distribution, chilled beams, VAV, together with visits to engineering design, estimating, laboratory and sites.

There were a number of structured training sessions on each system followed by the opportunity of putting what the engineer had learnt into practice by preparing designs and completing tenders.  During the ‘on job' training advice was available to help the engineer fully understand the practical application of the knowledge he had gained.

Terry Farthing, Head of Communications and Trox Academy, said:  "Our aim is to offer industry based training in areas that will benefit the design engineer.  Further programmes are planned for the future and any design engineers who are interested should contact me."

There is an obvious need for the industry to be more energy efficient and pay more attention to the ways in which energy is both used and wasted. Do you think we have the products on the market to meet our needs?
