Mitie’s engineering team has teamed up with Urban Splash to reinvigorate a set of historic buildings. The work in Plymouth included the design, installation and commissioning of the mechanical, electrical and public health services work on the Brewhouse and Clarence building at the Grade I Listed Royal William Yard.
The Royal William Yard was originally built as a victualling (food and supplies) yard to service the Royal Navy, and was designed by Sir John Rennie in 1824.
The first building to be completed was Clarence, named after the Duke of Clarence, who was later crowned King William IV, hence the name Royal William Yard. Both the Brewhouse and Clarence buildings have been developed into 115 apartments and penthouses overlooking the water across to Mount Edgecombe.
Royal William Yard has reinvigorated the dockyard area, and has won many awards including the RIBA Town and Country Design Award 2006 and a Housing Design Award, which promotes excellence and sustainability in home design.
