Meeting the hot-desk challenge
Published:  20 December, 2006

Lighting controls and management systems from Ex-Or Limited are helping office managers introduce flexible working practices and productive environments into office workspace.

Surveys have shown an increasing amount of hot-desking - workers sharing the same desk space; and of churn - the constant change in use and layout of office space.

Ex-Or has designed lighting control systems that match this increased flexibility of office working. Now managers can not only benefit from the energy cost savings afforded by Ex-Or lighting controls, but can also introduce flexible office working practices more cost effectively.

Surveys show that flexible office workers can spend around 45% of their working time on the move, away from their desks. Ex-Or office lighting controls use presence detection to monitor occupancy, and automatically switch off the lights when office space is unoccupied.

In offices where hot-desking is prevalent, desk space is used irregularly and often outside regular office hours. Presence detection lighting controls ensure lights automatically come on only when desks become occupied.

Increasingly, desks and workstations in open plan offices are moved around or changed in size to meet the ever changing needs of a dynamic company - so called churn. This means there is a frequent need to alter lighting systems to match the changed workstation layouts. This process normally involves hiring an electrician to alter cabling and switching, or having to carry out the complicated and time consuming process of reprogramming managed lighting systems via a PC.

But with the Ex-Or MLS Managed Lighting System, the buildings and facilities manager just has to use a simple hand-held programmer to alter and set the programmable features within the MLS detectors. He just needs to point the programmer at the nearest luminaire and easily make the changes needed at the touch of a button.

"With the huge increases in energy costs, most managers are well aware of the cost savings that lighting control can deliver," said Marketing Manager Charmian Cvek. "But not quite so well known is the fact that the flexibility of lighting control can make a great contribution towards achieving greater flexibility of office working."
