BEST (Building Engineering Services Training), the training subsidiary of the HVCA, is calling on employers to help overcome the acute shortage of qualified people who can assess the competence of building services apprentices.
BEST wants employers to encourage their existing technically competent staff to be trained as assessors. In return, they will receive free A1 training to assess the on-site NVQ two and three elements of an apprentices training. This will be provided through the BEST assessment centre and delivered via the BEST national assessor network.
BEST’s initiative is designed to support the development of a national network of trained NVQ assessors by encouraging employees of medium to large HVACR companies to train as assessors and commit as few as one to two days a month to assess apprentices’ on-site skills.
BEST, which is willing to fully fund the training of individuals who are interested in becoming assessors, says they can complete the qualification process within three to four months and will then be able to assess trainees under the BEST national assessor network.
John Evans, assessment centre manager for BEST, commented: “Now that we have launched the assessment centre, we are keen to expand the service rapidly as there is demand throughout the country to provide on-site assessment and, thus, enable apprentices to complete their training in a more manageable time frame.
“Without assessors, training can be held up, causing young people to potentially become de-motivated and lose faith in the apprenticeship programme. We are, therefore, keen to work very closely with employers and colleges to ensure the BEST assessment centre is a success. The assessment centre, and national assessor network, will enhance everyone’s capability to provide learners with quality training, encouragement and support.”
