BSEE - Building Services and Environmental Engineer
BCIA rewards excellence in building controls
Published:  23 March, 2006

This year will see the establishment of the first Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) Training Awards Ceremony. The success of the BCIA technical training programme, which has been running for only three years, has led to 800 module certificates being awarded. “The demand has been outstanding,” said Doug Robins, BCIA President, “and has far exceeded our expectations, which clearly demonstrates the high regard in which building controls engineering is held within the building services industry. To date the training programme has awarded 126 Technical Certificates and 54 Advanced Technical Certificates and each student has earned their qualification by successfully passing an examination at each module stage.”

There are six modules in the programme and passes in the first three (Fundamentals of HVAC & Building Technology, Measuring & Control Technology, and Hydraulics in Building Services) lead to the award of a Technical Certificate, while passes in the remaining three (Control Functions in Heating Plants, Control of Ventilation & Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology) result in an Advanced Technical Certificate.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday 24 May at the Hilton Hotel, Coventry.

The six award categories are as follows:

 Building Controls Engineer of the Year

 Best Overall Technical Training Student

 Frank Dennis OBE Marketing Award

 Training Advocate of the Year

 Initiative Award

 Industry Newcomer

BSEE will be exclusively covering the awards in this and the May issue.

Trend is a leading UK intelligent building management system (BMS) product supplier. Its innovative control solutions meet the most demanding requirements of modern buildings and help reduce whole life system costs.

Its systems are supplied through a network of accredited control systems integrators, all of whom have demonstrated that they can meet the high standards of workmanship, contract management, documentation, and quality control demanded by Trend. In addition, their value added offerings include specialist skills such as project management, control panel fabrication, electrical installation, and system configuration and commissioning, together with a range of after sales services to meet specific customer needs.

“More recently Trend has taken the accreditation concept one step further by establishing the Trend Expert Scheme for individual engineers working for systems integrators,” said Chris Monson, Strategic Marketing Manager for Trend Control Systems. The scheme is designed to give specifiers and customers the peace of mind that comes through knowing that the engineer working on their system has the necessary knowledge and skills to engineer and deliver Trend systems effectively and efficiently.

“The Building Controls Engineer of the Year award reflects our own Trend Expert Scheme in rewarding the individual for their exceptional skill and capability. A building controls engineer needs to be conversant not only in control methodology, but with the wide range of plant and equipment connected to the BMS, all this requires the highest standard of technical capability.”

Industry Newcomer - Sponsored by Siemens Building Technologies

To be awarded to someone who has entered the industry in the last twelve months. This can apply to college and university graduates or an experienced person from another industry sector who now works in building controls.

Siemens Systems division has over 30 years experience of providing owners, architects and building services engineers with building management and control solutions. Each regional office has the technical ability and trained personnel necessary to design, install, commission, and service all types of system. Whether it is for small, medium or large contracts, Siemens has the experience, know-how, technical and financial resources available.

“The requirements placed on building services are becoming more complex and there is an increased demand for standardised communication,” explains Ian Ellis, Marketing Services Manager for Siemens. “As a result, we provide control solutions based on international standards and state-of-the-art technologies. Our comprehensive range of peripheral equipment utilises industry standard control signals.”

The HVAC Products division manufactures and sells products for use in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and combustion plants for industrial and residential applications. Commercial products are sold through two distinct channels: an approved nationwide network of HVAC solutions certified partners and our authorised wholesalers. The Residential Products division supplies products for use in the residential market, such as thermostatic radiator valves and programmers. While the OEM AC&R division provides a range of controls and peripherals which it supplies to the leading OEM manufacturers in this field. Their products include terminal unit controllers, refrigeration valves and damper actuators.

“We are keen to encourage new talent; after all it is the future life blood of the building controls industry. We want people to view the industry as one where they can develop their skills and have a rewarding career and are pleased to support the BCIA in rewarding its exceptional people,” concluded Ian Ellis.

Initiative Award - Sponsored by Resource Data Management

This award is open to people involved in contracts that regularly demonstrate initiative in their work and would benefit from additional training.

Formed in August 2000 to design and manufacture control equipment for the commercial refrigeration sector, the RDM product portfolio has grown to include HVAC and energy management solutions, together with a 24/7 remote monitoring bureau and call centre serving leading blue-chip retailers amongst others. “Our products have been developed with three key themes: simple, easy to install and use; clear pricing; and the use of Internet protocol extensively throughout the range. This is all intended to encourage familiarity of use and interoperability,” said Andrew Chandler, Managing Director of Resource Data Management (RDM).

The ‘face’ of RDM is the Data Manager, a front-end panel that monitors and controls plant and equipment. Its modular design means that the end-user only pays for the specification they need and it can be sized to suit every application. Internet friendly, the Data Manager can be accessed remotely using standard browser software. A standard cat 5 network is used to connect the Data Manager to plant and equipment. It has the ability to sit on LAN or WAN networks allowing the end-user to access the system from any PC on their intranet.

Supporting the RDM product range is their ActiveFM Solution Centre providing a 24/7 bureau that constantly monitors the status of clients’ systems. The data is delivered in real time using a combination of Internet and telephone technologies. Data can be displayed on secure websites providing the end-user with site information in an easy to understand format.

“We are particularly pleased to be sponsoring the Initiative Award as RDM has always placed a high premium on the skills of its people; they are our greatest asset. Every company has its guidelines to help direct its employees, but the most successful people are those that are not afraid to use their initiative as well,” stated Andrew Chandler.

“Exceptional people need to be acknowledged and with the support of our awards sponsors the BCIA can reward those men and women who have excelled in their professional fields,” said Doug Robins. “The BCIA Training Awards Ceremony provides the opportunity for due recognition across a range of skills: technical, marketing, contracts, managerial, and those people who have taken their first steps to a building controls career.”
