Smart move for Jet fans
Published:  21 December, 2005

Fläkt Woods is working on a contract in Malaysia to supply large ventilation fans for an unusual tunnel/water alleviation project, known as SMART.

The Company will ship 80 of its renowned JM Axijet truly reversible jet fans to Kuala Lumpur under a contract valued at over €900,000. The JM Axijet jet fan range is designed for high efficiency and thrust, and low installed noise levels, giving equal airflow and thrust in each direction, for ventilation as well as removal of pollution and smoke.

SMART (Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel) is a unique engineering feat currently under construction to address two major issues in the Capital; flooding and traffic congestion.

Measuring 9.7km in length, the new tunnel will be the longest in Malaysia and will run underneath the city, between two huge ponds. A central 3km stretch on three levels, will become a motorway helping to reduce traffic congestion in the City centre. The jet fans will be installed in this middle section, on the upper level, providing a critical role to ventilate and provide emergency smoke extraction.

What is really unique about the scheme is that as well as the motorway, it will divert storm water away from the city centre on the lowest level, And when there is a very large downpour, the tunnel operators will be able to close off the road, open the sluice gates and let the entire tunnel (which is the height of a four storey building) be used as a massive stormwater tunnel.

Poll

There is an obvious need for the industry to be more energy efficient and pay more attention to the ways in which energy is both used and wasted. Do you think we have the products on the market to meet our needs?
