Positive results at T5
Published:  26 October, 2005

Further tangible evidence of the positive impact of the Major Projects Agreement (MPA) on the BAA Terminal 5 Project has been provided by independent auditors Baker Mallett.

Key findings of their study include:

• 88 percent of all respondents thought that the MPA had improved the Terminal 5 Project.

• Integrated Team Working has been adopted successfully.

• Performance and productivity has been improved by the adoption of the MPA.

• Sickness and absence figures compare very favourably with those on other major projects.

• Industrial relations compares favourably with other major projects.

Looking to the future, those interviewed felt that there was scope to introduce further harmonisation of terms and conditions of employment under the MPA.

Sir Michael Latham, Chairman of the MPA Forum said: “This study provides tangible evidence that the Major Projects Agreement is delivering positive benefits to the Terminal 5 Project. Other clients who have been watching the progress of the MPA at Terminal 5 since its introduction in December 2003 can now have increased confidence that this agreement can work.”

He continued: “The introduction of the MPA has not been without its challenges, but I would like to think that this study will help other clients to consider the positive benefits to be gained from the MPA on major projects. I would also encourage those responsible for planning the delivery of large M&E projects in the future, such as those connected with the London Olympic Games, to consider adopting the MPA as early as possible. We have seen from the agreement at Terminal 5 so far that bringing all parties together early on can provide a good starting point for delivering joint success.”

Baker Mallett already provides an independent audit service to the Terminal 5 Joint Council. They conducted interviews with 24 representatives of both the M&E suppliers and representatives of Amicus. They also heard the views of the Terminal 5 Joint Council.
