The Scottish operation of White Young Green (WYG) has won a further commission to provide consultancy support on one of Scotland’s most strategically significant regeneration schemes.
The Ł122m development at the site of the former Gartcosh Steelworks in Lanarkshire is on target to create 160,000 sq m of new business space and as many as up to 2,200 jobs once the development is complete. Located in the heart of central Scotland, the business park is to be developed as a joint initiative between Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire Council
Moving on from its involvement in Phase 2 when called upon in its role as lead consultants to provide planning, detailed design and construction supervision, WYG has been appointed to Stage 4, which will ensure that the site is brought to a state of readiness for construction work to begin.
In this phase additional road infrastructure work will be undertaken, the installation of utilities will be completed to create fully serviced plots for future development and a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS), will be introduced, a requirement of planning consent for the development.
David Taylor, WYG’s director for Scotland, is pleased to have been given a second commission at Gartcosh: “Our remit for this second appointment is similar to the work we have already carried out at Gartcosh.
“On this occasion, our environmental team is also involved in site investigation, reporting on any contamination aspects and abnormal ground conditions relating to the former use of the site as a steel rolling mill, which contained massive foundations and storage areas.”
The aim of the Gartcosh development partners is to stimulate further social and economic regeneration in north Lanarkshire and north east Glasgow so that it will be easier for local people to access jobs, whilst at the same time, transforming the site into a model for sustainable development with the establishment of an 80-acre nature reserve.
