Geoffrey Robinson, Managing Director of Geoffrey Robinson Ltd, a long established mechanical and electrical contractor based in Billingham, County Durham that employs over 100 staff, has become the new President of the Heating and Ventilating Contractors’ Association (HVCA) for 2005/6.
In his inaugural address to HVCA members and guests present at the recent HVCA annual dinner, held at the Royal Lancaster hotel in London, Mr Robinson, an HVCA member for 30 years, said that the HVCA’s agenda for change was both long and complex – comprising such disparate topics as sustainability, quality standards, health and safety, procurement practices, security of payment, skills development, workforce registration and energy efficiency.
Mr Robinson said he was mindful of the excellent work of outgoing President, Mike Taylor, a key thrust of which was to push forward, during his term of office, the whole subject of sustainability and giving it greater priority amongst the HVCA’s many campaigning issues. Mr Robinson said he was determined to carry on where Mike Taylor had left off, working with other construction interests to address the key issues of sustainability and climate change. This would, for example, place the long-term energy performance of buildings at the heart of specifications developed or implemented by the HVCA’s own members.
Mr Robinson also takes over at a critical period of the HVCA’s groundbreaking independent inspection and assessment regime. During the period of Mr Robinson’s office, the final tranche of the Association’s 1450 member firms will go through a rigorous independent third-party inspection and assessment, undertaken by BM TRADA, a certification body active in the construction industry. This will mean that all HVCA members will be able to provide third-party evidence of competence, professionalism, reliability and adherence to industry standards.

There is an obvious need for the industry to be more energy efficient and pay more attention to the ways in which energy is both used and wasted. Do you think we have the products on the market to meet our needs?
