Laing O'Rourke has appointed Hoare Lea Consulting Engineers for the detailed design phase of the Pathway project - a £761million, five year plan to extensively reconfigure and develop the University Hospitals of Leicester, (Leicester General and Glenfield Hospitals and the Leicester Royal Infirmary).
University Hospitals of Leicester, (UHL), will work in partnership with the private sector consortium Triskelion Healthcare Limited, a joint venture company formed by Equion Limited and Serco plc. Laing O’Rourke, the Triskelion Healthcare construction partner, will be responsible for all design and construction and Hoare Lea will provide design services for the full range of engineering systems for the three sites.
Pathway is the largest Private Finance Initiative, (PFI), hospital development outside of London, and the most ambitious in the country so far. Pathway will enhance the patient journey and provide a far superior environment for patients and for staff to deliver the highest levels of care. It will address many of the building maintenance issues so apparent within some of the current buildings, the oldest of which dates back to 1771.
The project will include the largest maternity service in Western Europe on one site, a landmark children’s hospital, a dedicated planned care and rehabilitation hospital and a Multi-Professional Education & Training Centre to provide innovative shared multi-professional teaching and clinical skills education and training.
The Pathway Project will now enter into the next phase, which involves developing detailed designs and contracts. The first buildings are expected to be complete in 2009 with the overall project finishing in 2011.
Steve Clifford of Hoare Lea Consulting Engineers said: "Hoare Lea is proud to be associated with this exciting project. We have been working with Laing O’Rourke for two years through the ITN phase of the PFI process and it is very satisfying to be appointed Preferred Bidder. We will look to providing innovative solutions that will deliver direct benefits to the Healthcare community of Leicester."
