BP1 is a thirty-two storey office building(with four basement levels) constructed on the former West India Dock site at Canary Wharf.The one million ft2 building is one of the tallest in the area and as part of its extensive role in the lighting design for the building,Londonbased lighting designers MBLD were asked to design a lighting scheme for the roof top that would complement the building and appear in balance with the other lit buildings within the estate.Tapio Rosenius of MBLD explains why Helvar was chosen as the lighting control supplier for the project:“We wanted an experienced lighting control manufacturer on this project,particularly in the field of fluorescent dimming and Helvar fitted the bill perfectly. Their wide experience on large commercial projects was invaluable and the Imagine system integrates well with the other lighting equipment involved.On-site commissioning was also first-class.” Integrated into the top two floors and roof structure of BP1 are a series of light boxes lit with dimmable T5 fluorescent lamps that provide the illuminated roof top effect. The Imagine system has been programmed to run through a sequence of lighting scenes that reflect the exterior light conditions.The result strikes a perfect balance between providing a dramatic effect and avoiding light pollution. Installed by Phoenix Electrical of London,the system has four x 12 way dimmer racks fitted with 48 channels of DSI ballast control.The system offers a combination of system flexibility and ease-of- maintenance.Designed for use with interchangeable two-channel dimming control modules,the Imagine system allows the lighting designer or installer to easily build a suitable configuration for all types of commercial light dimming applications.Imagine system is capable of controlling up to 3000 dimmer channels,with loads up to 40A per channel.In addition,the system has the capacity to create up to 3000 contrasting lighting scenes.
