Award winning lighting from Sill
Published:  01 September, 2005

Sill Lighting has played a role in yet another award winning lighting project, with over 70 of its fittings helping to illuminate Coventry’s Historic Quarter.

The project by Speirs and Major Associates to illuminate the three ecclesiastical sites of the Historic Quarter was part of a comprehensive city enhancement programme and won the heritage category at this year’s Lighting Design Awards.

A variety of Sill fittings are used on all three sites. Project Lighting Designer Philip Rose of Speirs and Major Associates explained: “Sill products were specified because they were the correct product for the lighting design intent, meeting optical performance and site condition requirements as well as being cost effective.”

The old ruins of St Michael’s Cathedral are lit on the inside only, to reveal the original details of the structure. Sill 485 series buried uplights are used to wash the inner facades with light and highlight the tracery of the windows, their low profile assisting installation into the historic and sensitive location.

In contrast, the new Cathedral is illuminated on the outside to reveal the texture of the façade. 020 series gimbal arrangement spotlights from Sill light the east façade and 020 series spotlights mounted on dwarf columns light the west façade.

494 series projectors are used to uplight the canopy of the new Cathedral and 491 series projectors to highlight the spire of the new Cathedral and internally illuminate the Chapel of Unity.
