A combination of Holophane’s column mounted amenity lighting luminaires, compact floodlights and in-ground luminaires have been used to create a visually stunning nightscape around the Palace of Art in Glasgow.
Located in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park, the Palace of Art pavilion was originally part of the Empire Exhibition of 1938. Over the years the building fell into disrepair until Glasgow City Council decided to refurbish the pavilion and its surroundings while providing local people with a new sports facility.
“The Palace of Art is surrounded by walkways around the park so we decided to create a spectacular scene at night through the use of colourful exterior lighting, which would also add visual interest to the predominantly white facades of the building,” explained Barry McAvoy from the Council’s building services department.
“The feedback from people using the space has been very positive,” he added.
Holophane’s Hydrel 7000 series floodlights, fitted with blue and green filters, have been used to wash the walls of the building with blue and green light. The range of sizes within the Hydrel 7000 series, combined with precise optics and a wide choice of mounting options enabled the Council to locate the floodlights in the optimum positions and to direct the light very accurately.
The floodlighting is supplemented by Hydrel M9400 in-ground modular fittings, in a range of wattages, augmenting the perimeter lighting as well as uplighting the tree-lined drive leading to the facility.
In the car park, Holophane’s Vista column-mounted luminaires have been used to provide evenly distributed lighting without upward light.
The modern architectural design of Vista ensures that the appearance of the luminaires complements the architecture of the space while also ensuring effective lighting of the car park at night.
“In specifying the luminaires,we also had to take account of the potential for vandalism, so we needed well-designed,robust fittings that would offer a long and reliable life,” Barry McAvoy continued. “Holophane was able to offer the quality of lighting that we needed, backed by very good technical support,” he added.
