Mercedes-Benz cars are inspired by an enduring passion:a passion for the pursuit of excellence, and this passion extends to the design of the company’s flagship showrooms. The H R Owen Mercedes-Benz dealership in Redhill is a case in point. With floor to ceiling glass panels providing plenty of natural light(and solar gain/heat loss)the building designers recognised that to ensure optimum comfort, high-performance and reliable air conditioning was an essential element in the electrical services design scheme.
However, energy efficiency and electrical load were a key consideration as the demands on the electrical supply include full display and task lighting,an on-site workshop, office space and showrooms.Consulting engineer JDA of Hemel Hempstead and Project Manager Colliers CRE worked closely with Easy Airconditioning of Birmingham who supplied Sanyo’s ECO G Gas Heat Pump Range -Europe’s only three pipe Gas Heat Pump VRF system - to meet the demanding brief. The main contractor was CPL Interiors who employed specialist contractor,Oasis Air Conditioning to carry out the installation.
Sanyo’s ECO G GHP Range is a pioneering system that utilises mains gas or LPG as its main power source and singlephase electricity just for startup and fan operation. This feature alone ensured that it was the ideal solution for a car dealership facing a short-fall in power supply.
Neal Gooding from Easy Airconditioning explains:“With the GHP system,Sanyo has developed an air conditioning solution that is environmentally-friendly,easyto-install,low on maintenance and,an ideal solution for Mercedes-Benz.The system provides 56 kW of cooling capacity and,in the winter, even at -15°C will provide 100 percent heating with no defrost cycle, thereby providing Mercedes-Benz staff and customers with the ultimate in comfort.”
Other benefits of using the Sanyo system include the flexibility of being able to use the same indoor units and controls for both split systems and GHP VRF systems at the site. The ECO G uses the same controls and indoor units as the rest of the range and the ability to mix and match with electric VRF and splits on site is easy and convenient for the client.HR Owen Mercedes Redhill has a typical combination of GHP and Split systems – all controlled via a single central temperature controller - plus a timeclock ensures the building stays optimally air conditioned for the opening hours of the showroom.

There is an obvious need for the industry to be more energy efficient and pay more attention to the ways in which energy is both used and wasted. Do you think we have the products on the market to meet our needs?
