A new initiative from the Industry Committee on Emergency Lighting (ICEL) and the British Standards Institute (BSI) enables installers to verify their competence in designing, installing and testing emergency lighting.
The newly launched ICEL/BSI Competent Engineer certification scheme provides a register of engineers who have successfully completed a specially structured training course on the design, installation and testing of emergency lighting. In selecting engineers from the register, building operators will have the peace of mind that their emergency lighting will provide ongoing safety and full compliance with legislation.
The initiative has been launched in response to changes in fire safety regulations and the publication of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. This order phases out fire certificates in all but a few high risk sites and places the onus on employers to carry out risk assessments of their sites. They will also be required to take ongoing action to ensure that the fire precaution equipment is adequate and that it remains so.
The Competent Engineer course covers every aspect of emergency lighting, including legislation and standards, assessment of existing systems, design procedures, system selection and installation, testing and maintenance. Registered engineers will also receive regular updates to ensure they are familiar with any changes in legislation, standards and best practice.
