The spectacular £70m Sage Gateshead Music Centre has become the first major project in which all three versions of Ackermann Onix underfloor boxes will be installed.
Situated on the Gateshead bank of the Tyne, the Music Centre houses a 1700-seat concert hall, a theatre with seating for up to 500 and a rehearsal hall. The venue also includes an education area, an information resource facility and a covered, riverside concourse with cafes, bars, shops and the box office.
Designed specifically for installation in hard floor surfaces, the Ackermann floor boxes are engineered to meet the varying requirements of different floor types and include a unique water-resistant version.
Electric power throughout the brand new facility is distributed via Ackermann screed ducting. In the Terrazzo flooring, such as is installed in the concourse, access to the ducting is via custom designed floor boxes, utilising the water resistant Onix cassette, with centre cord outlets.
Manufactured in aluminium, the bespoke floor boxes have a lid with ribbed finish that provides a strong, wear-resistant, slip-proof surface. The units’ centre cord outlets allow access to power and data services; plus, for this project, the centre cord also allows access to custom built facility panels, which will be used for controlling special lighting effects.
Circular aluminium floor boxes with a centre cord outlet were installed in the Centre’s wooden floors, whilst round Ackermann German floor boxes were used in carpeted areas, such as in offices.
