One of London's most famous landmarks, Tower Bridge, has been
safeguarded against electrical failure during the refurbishment of
its static standby generator after renting a road tow generator from
Merlin Power Management.
Providing the third line of support to all Tower Bridge's essential
services, the 200kVA unit is providing standby power for Tower
Bridge's exhibition, its corporate hospitality suites and its bridge
lifts.
The only UK Company able to hire a 200kVA road tow unit,
Merlin Power Management has supplied the compact, mobile unit
with an acoustic canopy, so that noise is kept to a minimum.
“We have a reputation for being able to deal with difficult
situations”, says Tony Hooper, Hire Manager at Merlin Power
Management. “Therefore, we have become the first port of call for
any company needing to resolve complicated, unusual or
emergency power problems”.
The changeover operation was carried out on a weekday with
Merlin's engineers manoeuvring the generator into a small space
and coupling up the necessary cables in a smooth and efficient
operation.
Eric Sutherns, Operations Manager for Tower Bridge, said: “As
London Bridge operates such a wide range of facilities and is in
constant use, it is essential to safeguard the electricity supply
which is why we have mains power, a smaller secondary supply
and should both those fail, a standby generator.
“Merlin Power Management provided a smooth operation and
ensured that their generator arrived on time and was quickly and
expertly installed”.
Tower Bridge, which has stood over the River Thames since
1894, lifts approximately 900 times a year to allow tall ships, cruise
ships, naval vessels and other large craft to pass through.

There is an obvious need for the industry to be more energy efficient and pay more attention to the ways in which energy is both used and wasted. Do you think we have the products on the market to meet our needs?
