Disabled access at a grade II listed town hall has been improved in time for a town
twinning civic reception, thanks to the Leeds office of White Young Green.
The changes, which were carried out over a six month period, were identified as a
result of a DDA Audit carried out by the company, which showed the building was
obviously inaccessible to disabled users.
As well as highlighting the buildings shortcomings, White Young Green also
assisted the Council in selecting a suitable council-approved contractor, as well as
dealing with planning permission applications.
The firm’s design capabilities were also engaged in remodelling parts of the interior
building. As part of the overhaul, power and lighting installations were modified,
doorways widened and a lift and fire doors installed. Other areas which benefited from
remodelling work included the provision of a unisex wheelchair accessible toilet, with
parent toddler facility. Externally, the building now benefits from ramps to the main
entrance and a principal fire exit.
Barbara Bell, Town Hall Clerk, said: “As the Town Hall is a listed building, it was
important that the council appointed a firm who could deal sensitively with any arising
issues. The project has gone very smoothly and the standard of workmanship is
exemplary.”
Commenting on the project, Richard Oxley, White Young Green’s Principal Project
Manager said: “We were delighted to have this opportunity to work for Wetherby
Council and carry out the audit. It was clear from the outset that without considerable
work, the building would not meet the requirements of the DDA. We were able to use
our expertise on design and sustainability in construction to advise the Council of the
most efficient and cost effective way to ensure the building could be brought up to
date.
