  • Air source heat pumps - how do they compare to condensing boilers?
By Graham Hazell, Technical Consultant for Colt International
    Published:  30 May, 2008

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) are generally considered to be a more energy efficient option to gas boilers. By extracting warmth from the surrounding air, the heat energy released can be many times the energy required to power the equipment. In some instances however, a gas-fired condensing boiler may be a better choice, as ASHP systems are, by their very nature, dependent on the ambient temperature and more efficient at certain times of the year.

By Ian Bitterlin , International Sales Director for Chloride
    Published:  29 May, 2008

Lead-acid accumulators are amongst the earliest examples of electrical technology and remain as one of only two electrical devices that cannot be isolated. Over 90% of the worlds' UPS population is supported by lead-acid batteries and dominated in Europe by Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) technology. However, despite their long and largely unchanged technological heritage, VRLA battery technology, which was established, predominately in the 1990s, has a chequered reputation of indefinable lifespan and questionable reliability.

  • Meeting the low carbon building challenge
With Government legislation driving the need for low carbon buildings, consultants must acknowledge their responsibility by specifying energy efficient ventilation in commercial properties. Nygel Humphrey of Vent-Axia explains how low carbon ventilation can play a significant role in meeting key requirements.
    Published:  29 May, 2008

In a bid to meet Kyoto carbon targets the Government is continuing to roll out a raft of energy efficiency legislation. Since buildings are responsible for nearly 50% of the EU CO2 emissions, with much of this generated by energy hungry services, it is consultants that have been set the challenge of delivering low carbon buildings. Commercial buildings are responsible for around 13% of total carbon emissions in the UK and although they do not have as much of an impact as domestic property they still have a vital role to play in the struggle against climate change.

  • Water Treatment - Hidden dangers in water systems
UK outbreaks of Legionnaires Disease have risen sharply in recent years (The Health Protection Agency reports 163 cases during the first half of 2007, compared with 120 cases the year before and 103 cases in the same period in 2005). Ralph Coney, a Director of GB Environmental, discusses the possible sources of Legionella infection and outlines a water treatment solution that his company has designed specifically to tackle the threat of Legionella and other water-borne pathogens in water supply systems.
    Published:  29 May, 2008

    Schools and colleges

Traditionally school water tanks were designed to hold a day's supply of water, but in those days a higher volume of water was used in the preparation of school dinners and shower facilities after field sports. Today, the same schools use a lot less water and so the water level in the tank moves very little, remaining stagnant for some time, which provides optimum conditions for the development of Legionella.

  • Flexible working needs flexible lighting
When specifying lighting for a modern workplace, the key to meeting the needs of the people in the space is to design flexibility in from the start. Rodger Henderson of Waldmann Lighting explains how freestanding and desk mounted lighting systems can play an important role.
    Published:  29 May, 2008

Although freestanding lighting, in the form of uplighters or combined up and downlighting, has been available for many years it has only had limited use in the UK, compared to many other European countries. With more and more organisations adopting flexible working practices, however, it is now proving to be the ideal solution for providing an equally flexible lighting installation.

  • Get a helping hand
By Gary Perry, Divisional Managing Director – Corporate Services for Norland Managed Services
    Published:  29 May, 2008

The world is a very different place than 100 years ago, and will be different again in another 100 years. A key change will be climate. Without getting into the debate on the extent of climate change, increasing numbers of organisations realise that they have responsibility for minimising the impact their activities are having on the environment. This is not philanthropy, this is common sense: why should organisations generate a profit at the expense of future generations?

  • Practice what you preach

  • Powerful proof of application suitability
Time is money. In any construction project the old adage rings true for both contractors and clients. Keeping costs down whilst delivering a quality end product without going over schedule continues to be a challenging process for contractors of all kinds. It's little wonder then that contractors and their suppliers alike are constantly looking for new ways of reducing the time they need to spend on site. Tim Brown, National Specification Manager at Cablofil explains.
    Published:  29 May, 2008

For electrical contractors, the advent of steel wire cable management tray has dramatically reduced data cable installation times, and, as a consequence, helped reduce costs too.  Up to 40% quicker to install than traditional perforated steel tray, steel wire tray can be cut, shaped and fixed on site.  What's more, the installer does not need to be a qualified electrician, allowing contractors to free up the time of skilled workers for other tasks and speed up the electrical installation still further.
