  • Monitoring identifies energy-savings
    Published:  19 September, 2007

Energy monitoring linked to a Building Management System (BMS) is an integrated route to maximising energy savings and meeting reporting requirements, says Stuart Parry of Cambridge-based automation specialists PA Collacott & Co.

  • Learning to think by sensors

A breakthrough, caused in no small part by energy saving legislation, has hit the normally sedate world of fan technology. Now the talk is less about the fans, and more about the way the fan systems are controlled.

  • Building management is versatile

The Desigo building management system has been further enhanced with the new Desigo TX-I/O modules. These provide high flexibility, greater user friendliness and lower energy and capital costs.

  • IT facilities are vulnerable
    Published:  19 September, 2007

Computer downtime means loss of time and profitability. Yet, according to a recent research survey carried out amongst IT managers, it was reported that only 8.1% use an integrated security and environmental monitoring system to safeguard their data centres.

  • Intelligent solutions for Wembley
The new Wembley Stadium in London is an iconic international sports stadium and conference centre towering over the north London skyline. With the opportunity to build from scratch, there was a desire to integrate all the technical services onto a single network, to enable Capex and Opex savings and enhance revenue generation opportunities. It is the largest integration project in the UK ever and arguably the most technically advanced stadium in the world.

Wembley National Stadium Ltd (WNSL) is home to (UK) Football Association operations for sports and other events of international significance.

  • Will building automation become automation?
By Jeff Whiting of Mitsubishi Electric
    Published:  19 September, 2007

Automated buildings bring great benefits to occupants and owners alike, such as improved energy efficiency and comfort. However, the control systems must maintain high levels of reliability to maximise the quality and effectiveness of those benefits, such as saving energy and other running costs.

  • Meeting the energy needs
An efficient and effective lift control system is vital to building owners and, aside from the reliability and safety aspects associated with the ever changing areas of lift legislation, going green is becoming the prime consideration when installing or upgrading a building’s lifts.

As part of a wide range of innovative products, this year has seen the launch of the TVC Ethos Eco-Mode control system from the UK based manufacturer of lift components and control systems, LiftStore.

  • Taking an holistic view of BMS
Most building management systems don’t work! Of course this is a sweeping statement, but rather like the Curate’s Egg, most are only good in parts. When a new building is planned, emphasis is on minimising costs of construction. Lifetime costs go largely unconsidered yet offer great scope for savings, argues Peter Robinson of Schneider Electric’s Services & Projects.
    Published:  19 September, 2007

What’s a building cost? You’ll probably find someone who can tell you how much it cost to build, which is not only just part of the answer, but it’s not even the biggest part. In fact, studies have shown that the operating costs of a typical commercial building will, over its life, be many times more than the cost of construction.

Poll

There is an obvious need for the industry to be more energy efficient and pay more attention to the ways in which energy is both used and wasted. Do you think we have the products on the market to meet our needs?
