Help improve our sectorTen thousand places have been made available for 14-19 year old diplomas relating to building services engineering and the development of this new way of learning heralds an exciting shift to industry led education.Published: 22 August, 2007By September 2008, two diplomas will be implemented relevant to our sector: Engineering, which has been allocated more than 6,000 places for the first delivery, and Construction & Built Environment, with almost 4,000 places available. BCIA awards 1,000th training certificateIn just four short years, the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) has awarded its 1,000th building controls technical training certificate.Published: 22 March, 2007The recipient was Shaun Gilding of Trend Control Systems Ltd who was enrolled in the ‘Fundamentals of HVAC and Building Technology’ module being held at the headquarters office of Trend Control Systems Limited in Horsham. “Who would be awarded the 1,000th certificate was a lottery right up to the end of the day,” explained Keith Doherty, BCIA Trainer, “as each module requires that the delegates pass an examination before a certificate is awarded.”

Sponsorship support for the first Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) Training Awards Ceremony has been overwhelming, reports Doug Robins, BCIA President. “Sponsors for the six award categories were identified within a few weeks of publicising the event, which clearly demonstrates the value that our members place on good, independent training. Until the Association developed the current generic-based training scheme, which offers two levels of qualification, engineers had to be recruited from other industries and then retrained in-house, which was patently unsatisfactory.”

This year will see the establishment of the first Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) Training Awards Ceremony. The success of the BCIA technical training programme, which has been running for only three years, has led to 800 module certificates being awarded. “The demand has been outstanding,” said Doug Robins, BCIA President, “and has far exceeded our expectations, which clearly demonstrates the high regard in which building controls engineering is held within the building services industry. To date the training programme has awarded 126 Technical Certificates and 54 Advanced Technical Certificates and each student has earned their qualification by successfully passing an examination at each module stage.”
