A step in the right direction
Published:  07 January, 2009

Faber Maunsell is giving eleven young people a tremendous opportunity to get into STEP (Structured Training Excellence Programme) and launch a career for themselves in engineering throughout its northern offices.

With a commitment to nurturing young talent within the engineering field, Faber Maunsell combines structured training with work experience and offers careers in the UK and overseas in association with AECOM – its American parent company.

The scheme has so far taken on almost 100 recruits across the UK.

Developed specifically to address the skills shortage in science, technology and engineering in the UK, Faber Maunsell wants to attract school leavers to help sustain the predicted growth in the engineering sector.

Peter Drenon, director of the Newcastle and Leeds offices, believes it is one of the best career opportunities in the market today.  He said: “STEP is a career path which can offer school and college leavers the opportunity to earn while they learn.  Students who join after their GCSEs would work for four days and study one day a week at a local college for National Certificate qualifications before deciding on further career directions.   School leavers with good A levels or equivalent can also join for a gap year.  After this, they are considered for sponsorship through university with guaranteed holiday work and a potential full time job at the end of their course.”

This year’s intake of four of the eleven STEP trainees at the Newcastle office has been managed by Lisa Simpson, senior technician and local STEP coordinator, who has been responsible for sifting through the 112 applications received together with support from the Institute of Civil Engineers, Connexions Careers Advisers and the North East Chamber of Commerce.
