Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Services design consultants, Cunnington Clark have provided performance design services and site supervision on all mechanical, fire fighting and electrical engineering services for Phase Two of the IKEA Distribution Centre at Doncaster.
The 35m high and 70,000 sq m extension to the existing 60,000 sq m warehouse was handed over in December 2005 and officially opened in February 2006. Together with Phase One it forms the largest IKEA warehouse in the world, large enough to fit 20 football pitches and has the equivalent floor space of eight of the 13 UK IKEA stores.
Cunnington Clark set performance criteria for all the M&E installations on site and completed detailed inspections throughout the project. Electrical installations were carried out by Goodmarriot and Hursthouse, mechanical works by Hilton Building Services and fire fighting by Hall and Kay. Critical aspects of the project included maintaining temperature variations in adjacent areas of the building. The 35m high silo with automatic cranes operates at 6°C while adjacent occupied areas not segregated by walls require a temperature of 16°C.
