Trox (UK) has supplied 44 special multi-service chilled beams (MSCBs) to the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN), a department of University College London, in a contract worth over £100,000.
The project involved assembling the active MSCBs, – which incorporate cooling, heating, lighting (down lighting and lighting slab) and PIRs, – at Trox’s Thetford, Norfolk factory.
Trox (UK)’s Trevor Minns said: “The MSCBs can form a distinctive architectural feature in any commercial application, whether new or refurbished. It is a refined and elegant solution to climate control. It frees architects to experiment with bold and flexible interior designs while, at the same time, offering the building occupants the very best in indoor air quality and comfort. The MSCBs enable our clients to specify, for example, the type of light fitting and the performance of the chilled beam and we then operate as part of the design team alongside the architect, consultant or project manager.”
The beams for the LCN are made from perforated steel and incorporate aluminium extrusions with perforated faces.
The LCN is designed to act as a focus for nanoscale materials and device research. A joint enterprise with Imperial College London, the Centre will be housed in a new building offering eight levels of laboratory and office space for academics from electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. Key infrastructure is to include a 200m2 clean room.
