A world first from Philips
Published:  21 December, 2005

Philips has announced the removal of all radioactivity and lead from its fluorescent lamp starters. The company is the first manufacturer in the world to offer a ‘green’ starter by eliminating the two most relevant hazardous substances of starters. Although the amount of radio activity existing in starters was minute – less than a 1000th of that used in a standard wrist watch, its total removal demonstrates Philips commitment to sustainability.

The new advanced Philips S2 & S10 starters also have a number of other key benefits. The failure rate is extremely low, and is put at fewer than 100 parts/million. This is also an important environmental benefit with respect to waste reduction, as it has been calculated that, every year, 1.25 billion lamp starters fail.

The new S2 and S10 starters help prolong lamp life, leading to a lower cost of ownership. Minimal early lamp failures also result in reducing lamp disposal and the need for more complex recycling, because many older fluorescent lamps contain high amounts of mercury and lead glass
