Hospital gets intelligent lighting
Published:  29 November, 2005

Simmtronic Ltd has provided an intelligent digital lighting control system for a new hospital in Romford. The £260m PFI hospital is being built by Bovis Lend Lease for Barking, Havering & Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust and the use of this technology represents a new approach to lighting control within hospitals, providing an opportunity for significant energy saving.

Commissioned by contractor T. Clarke Plc, Simmtronic has taken on some design responsibility for engineering a high-reliability system capable of delivering this complex project whilst providing the energy efficiency demanded.

As part of the lighting control scheme, dimming functions have been widely employed throughout the hospital - in both wards and consulting rooms. Simmtronic has also designed and supplied a special lighting control interface with the nurse call system to provide patients with a personal bedhead control featuring on/off and dimming functions.

The extensive use of presence detection in non-clinical areas will deliver energy savings by ensuring lights are automatically switched off when these locations are unoccupied.
