In a roll-out programme to install comfort cooling in Asda stores, Lennox is supplying a range of packaged rooftop air conditioners and chillers to meet the individual needs of each store. Lennox was specified by Asda following a competitive tender exercise involving four manufacturers.
“Although the exact requirements vary from store to store, we were looking for a supplier that could offer us a range of solutions to meet our requirements at a pre-agreed cost,” explained an Asda spokesperson.
Where possible, Lennox rooftop packaged units are used for both heating and cooling, providing Asda with a simple and cost effective solution that reduces pipework installation and commissioning requirements, while also eliminating the need for separate boiler plant. In locations where the roof design is not suitable or rooftop plant is not acceptable to local planning authorities, Lennox EcoMax chillers are installed externally, serving separate air handing units.
The cooling plant serves distributed ductwork to provide conditioned air to the space in most cases but where this was not feasible four-pipe fan coil systems were used instead.
Control of units installed during 2004 is via Siemens outstations built into the chillers and rooftop units. Rooftop packages installed during 2005 will use a bespoke unit modified from Lennox’s Baltic unit to meet the precise needs of Asda’s ‘smart store’ design. These will incorporate an interface card to enable the BMS to link to the plant via a Modbus system. As a result, Asda will benefit from reduced capital costs and easier controls commissioning.
