Pick Everard has designed an inspiring and futuristic building for Stephenson College in Leicestershire which has been shortlisted for 'Building of the Year' in the ProCon Leicestershire Property Awards.
The £15.24 million 'statement building' is designed to embrace the latest thinking on teaching environments and will receive its official grand opening in spring 2006. Mike Pole, designer at Pick Everard, said: "We've designed a stimulating and innovative learning environment and an efficient building specifically designed for its purpose, in a landscape setting that reflects the forward thinking and dynamic nature of the institution. The College is to be commended for its bold and coherent vision; we are delighted to have been able to bring it to life."
The College runs a range of academic, vocational and professional courses, serving more than 12,000 students a year. The state-of-the-art building is located on the corner of Stephenson Way and Thornborough Road, on the edge of Coalville in Leicestershire. The visual impact of the new building is uncompromisingly bold and imaginative, with a dramatic, curved and sloping glass façade fronting onto Stephenson Way. A copper-clad, glassed-roof 'drum' feature highlights and illuminates the main entrance area and there is a series of striking and functional angular 'fins' for passive solar shading.
Learning will take place in a series of linked spaces, offering students freedom of movement between integrated practical classrooms, ICT, text, audio, group and individual learning opportunities.
