ECA and IIE sign memorandum for future collaboration
Published:  22 September, 2005

The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to work together to promote professional engineering standards within the electrical contracting industry.

The MoU is the first of its kind to be signed by the IIE and a trade association, which reflects the importance of the ECA within the electrical engineering industry.

The ECA and the IIE will work in partnership, through joint initiatives, to provide craftsmen, technicians and engineers with wider opportunities for professional recognition and registration and further encourage greater professional development by addressing education, training and skills issues.

Welcoming the new partnership, David Pollock, ECA Director, said: “We are delighted with this groundbreaking new collaboration between the IIE and ECA, which will benefit both our organisations. In particular, we are pleased that ECA member companies will now have the opportunity to promote professional development of their employees through recognition by the IIE.”

Peter Wason, IIE Chief Executive commented: “The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the ECA and IIE will allow us to develop and implement initiatives that will forward the objectives of both parties to enhance the professional capabilities of those working in the electrical sector.”

The first of these initiatives is the establishment by the IIE of a new Engineering Craftsman grade of IIE membership. ECA will manage applications for Engineering Craftsman and Engineering Technician, submitted by ECA member companies on behalf of their employees.

In addition, as part of the drive for improved standards amongst engineering craftsmen, the IIE has launched a Register of Engineering Craftsmen. Inclusion on the Register will demonstrate a craftsman’s proven knowledge and competence and will provide the first step on the ladder for craftsmen aspiring to professional careers within the industry.
