Ministers approve NICEIC in Scotland
Published:  22 September, 2005

Ministers in Scotland have approved the NICEIC as a scheme provider for Certifiers of Construction (Electrical Installations to BS 7671), the revised electrical safety standard introduced in the Building Regulations by the Scottish Building Standards Agency (SBSA) in May.

The Scottish certification system enables qualified and experienced building professionals and tradesmen employed by reputable companies that operate careful checking systems, to be responsible for ensuring compliance with Building Regulations without the need for detailed scrutiny of designs or inspections by Local Authorities. Certification is an optional procedure for the implementation of the building regulations in Scotland, and is only relevant to work that requires a building warrant.

Director General of the NICEIC, Jim Speirs said: “We are delighted to have secured approval from Ministers as a scheme provider for Certifiers of Construction. This approval, and the expansion of our Edinburgh office and strengthened network of engineers, will enable the NICEIC to provide an even greater service to electrical contractors and specifiers in Scotland.”

NICEIC Registration with the Certification of Construction (Electrical Installations to BS 7671) scheme will begin immediately. Over half of the 800 Approved Contractors enrolled with the NICEIC in Scotland have already pre-registered with the scheme, and many have undertaken the one-day Scottish Building Regulations for Electrical Contractors course, ensuring that they are able to begin certifying their own work as soon as the short administrative procedures are undertaken.
