York International, selected by BAE Systems on a whole-life cost basis through a competitive tendering process,is supplying chilled water plants and HVAC equipment to six Type 45 Anti-Air Warfare Destroyers, the future backbone of the Royal Navy fleet and a vital British asset.

The new 7,350 tonne and 152.4m long ships, each able to accommodate up to 235 personnel, will introduce living standards suitable for both male and female sailors across cabins, messes and recreational areas, and improve considerably on current levels.

To ensure comfortable living and working environments for the crews,York is providing four skid-mounted 1100kW single screw compressor water chillers with integrated chilled water pumps to each of the warships.York will also supply a range of HVAC equipment, including:air filtration units, air treatment units, fan coil units, ventilation fans, chilled water system valve panels and expansion tanks. In addition,York will provide duct-mounted heaters,duct-mounted cooling coils,NBCD dampers,controls,pre-insulated ductwork and fittings.

All chilled water and HVAC equipment is custom engineered by the York Navy Group to suit the layout of the vessel, providing optimised performance that ensures operational temperature and humidity conditions for Navy personnel and systems.Proven components and sub assemblies are used throughout to guarantee in service availability, reliability and maintainability. Each finished item is proven by means of rigorous testing at York’s factory prior to delivery and final installation. Test results provided include noise, vibration, shock, EMC, thermal performance and tilt testing at full load.

The Type 45 Anti Air Warfare Destroyer is of huge significance for the Royal Navy. It is a versatile warship that will act as a multi- role, general purpose platform capable of a spectrum of tasks from peace support and defence diplomacy through to high-intensity warfare. Designed for flexibility, it draws on the latest technologies to provide worldclass capabilities.

Type 45 has been designed from the outset to be as economical as possible to run and maintain. In consequence, all Type 45 equipment and systems are being purchased on a 'through-life cost' basis that looks at total cost of ownership over an item's life instead of lowest initial purchase price alone.
